Associated Press reported that Hannah Rapp, a 26-year-old professional boxer, died after she was struck while bicycling Saturday morning on a rural road in Brazos County, Texas. The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office said Rapp was riding with another cyclist when a driver passed them, stopped, backed up and hit her. Emergency responders took Rapp to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The crash area is near Bryan, about 80 miles northwest of Houston.

Authorities identified the driver as 31-year-old Charles Medina. According to AP, investigators had not immediately given a motive. Medina was arrested on a manslaughter charge and was being held Sunday on $250,000 bail. Jail and court records cited by AP did not list an attorney for him.

Rapp was described by boxing officials as a rising figure in the sport. World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaimán Saldivar said in a statement that the international boxing community was grieving her death and praised her as both a fighter and a valued member of the boxing community.

AP reported that Rapp grew up in Yorktown, Indiana, graduated from Purdue University in 2022 and moved to Texas in 2024 for a job as a fire and life safety inspector at Texas A&M. She was also pursuing a professional boxing career and had compiled an 8-0-1 record before challenging Tiara Brown for the WBC women’s featherweight title last month in Orlando, Florida, where she lost by unanimous decision.
