Republic of Ireland call up Hopcroft for play-off

Republic of Ireland head coach Carla Ward has named Crystal Palace midfielder Shanade Hopcroft in her squad for next month’s Women’s World Cup play-off against Kazakhstan, BBC Sport Football reported. Hopcroft, who was born in England, is eligible to represent Ireland through her grandmother from County Sligo. The 28-year-old had recently returned to Crystal Palace after a spell with Birmingham City and has also previously been part of the Chelsea academy, as well as playing for London City Lionesses.

Ward’s squad also includes defender Heather Payne back after an absence of about a year. However, Ireland will be without several regulars for the first leg in Astana, including captain Katie McCabe and midfielder Marissa Sheva, who are suspended. Denise O’Sullivan will not travel for the opening match, while Tara O’Hanlon and Saoirse Noonan are sidelined by injury. Ruesha Littlejohn was not selected.

The team reached the play-offs after missing out on automatic qualification, losing a decisive final qualifier against France in June. Ireland will play Kazakhstan away on 9 October before hosting the return leg in Cork on 13 October. If they progress, they will meet Poland or Belgium for a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Ireland made their World Cup debut at the 2023 tournament in Australia, which adds context to the importance of this qualifying campaign.
