Religious Leaders Bid Farewell to Bishop Rubaramira Ahead of Successor’s Installation

What the report says
Religious leaders in Kisoro District have held a farewell ceremony for retiring Kabale Diocese Bishop Callist Rubaramira, as the diocese prepares to install his successor, Bishop-elect Monsignor Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire. The event brought together clergy from different denominations and was led by Muhabura Diocese Bishop Godfrey Mbitse, according to Nile Post.
Rubaramira is stepping down after 23 years heading Kabale Diocese. His farewell comes ahead of the episcopal ordination and installation of Gubazire, which is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Rushoroza Cathedral. Nile Post reported that thousands of faithful, bishops, clergy and government officials are expected to attend the ceremony.
Speakers at the gathering praised Rubaramira for promoting cooperation among religious leaders and supporting development efforts in the region. The article says Mutorere Deanery Dean Sebatware credited him with projects that improved livelihoods and helped reduce poverty, while Kisoro District Khadhi Sheikh Ali Mwesigye urged him to remain available for guidance even after retirement.
Nile Post also reported that Pope Leo XIV accepted Rubaramira’s retirement on July 15, 2026, and appointed him Apostolic Administrator until Gubazire’s installation. Gubazire, born in 1974 in Kitumba, was ordained a priest in 2003 and has served in several regions, most recently as Dean of Studies at Spiritan University College in Ghana.
