Relief NGO Pledges Support for Urban Refugees Ahead of Kampala Marathon

African Initiatives for Relief and Development (AIRD) has reaffirmed its support for urban refugees as Uganda prepares to host the Urban Refugee Marathon and a National High-Level Conference in Kampala, according to Nile Post. The humanitarian and development organisation said the events are aimed at highlighting refugee inclusion, social cohesion and the challenges faced by displaced people living in cities.

At a press briefing, AIRD communications and marketing manager Charlotte Muhwezi said the group’s work with refugees and host communities includes logistics, infrastructure, livelihood support and other forms of assistance. She said this year’s marathon theme, “Building Inclusive Resilient Communities,” reflects AIRD’s focus on helping displaced people live with dignity and hope. The organisation is taking part in the marathon for a second straight year and is also providing financial support for the event.

The report said the marathon is backed by the Office of the President’s Diaspora Affairs department and other partners. It is intended to bring together refugees, host communities, government institutions and humanitarian actors, while drawing attention to collaboration as a way to improve protection and self-reliance.

Uganda hosts one of Africa’s largest refugee populations, including many people living in urban areas alongside local communities. AIRD said no single institution can address these needs alone, underscoring the role of government, aid groups, development partners, the private sector and refugee communities in supporting durable solutions.
