What the report says

Deadline reported that Rebel Wilson has won a defamation case brought by Charlotte MacInnes, the Australian actress who appears in Wilson’s directorial debut, “The Deb.” Justice Elizabeth Raper delivered the ruling in Sydney on Wednesday, finding that Wilson’s Instagram posts about MacInnes were not defamatory and that MacInnes had not shown serious harm from the publications. Deadline said MacInnes plans to appeal.

The dispute centered on Wilson’s public comments about a September 2023 incident involving “The Deb” producer Amanda Ghost and MacInnes at a Sydney apartment after a swim at Bondi Beach. Ghost and MacInnes acknowledged sharing a bath but said it was non-sexual, that they were wearing swimsuits, and that it followed a medical incident involving Ghost. Wilson alleged MacInnes had told her the encounter made her uncomfortable and later changed course after receiving career opportunities from Ghost. MacInnes denied that account and sued over four Instagram posts.

According to Deadline, the judge found that MacInnes had changed her account of whether she felt uncomfortable, while also expressing doubts about the reliability of testimony from MacInnes, Ghost and Wilson. The court nevertheless found Wilson’s actions and contemporaneous records were consistent with her version of events.

The ruling is one part of a broader legal fight surrounding “The Deb.” Deadline noted that producers, including Ghost, are suing Wilson in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging she pursued an unjustified vendetta after being refused a writing credit. The film is scheduled for a U.S. digital release on August 25 through Sunrise Films, while Wilson’s next feature, “Girl Group,” is set for the Toronto Film Festival.
