SOROTI, Uganda — The RDC Secretariat under Uganda’s Office of the President has warned local government officials in Soroti District that continued poor service delivery and mismanagement of public projects could lead to arrests. The warning came during a monitoring visit on Friday, August 7, 2026, led by Dr. Sr. Mary Grace Akiror, the deputy head of the RDC Secretariat and the Anti-Corruption Unit in the Office of the President.

According to Watchdog Uganda, the team inspected a range of government projects, including boreholes, schools, roads and health facilities, to assess workmanship, oversight and value for money. The visit followed a national local government performance assessment that placed Soroti among the lower-performing districts in service delivery. Akiror urged officials to stop relying on explanations and instead show measurable improvements, while also calling on those unable to deliver to consider stepping aside.

The monitoring team raised concerns over several projects, including the renovation of Aminit Primary School, a road project linking Lira, Kamuda and Aboket, and a low-cost sealing project in Tubur Town Council. District officials pointed to funding gaps, equipment shortages and staffing shortages as contributing factors. Soroti District Chairperson Bob Owiny said leaders should act on the findings before enforcement measures are taken, emphasizing shared responsibility between political and technical staff. More broadly, the report reflects ongoing national scrutiny of local government accountability and public spending in Uganda.
