RDC Akech Hails Dokolo Residents for Joining National Cleaning Day, Urges Wider Public Participation

Dokolo Post reported that Dokolo Resident District Commissioner Barbara Akech praised residents and local institutions for taking part in Uganda’s National Cleaning Day exercise in Dokolo Town Council on Saturday. The activity reportedly ran from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and followed a directive by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja designating the last Saturday of every month for nationwide cleaning of homes, workplaces, markets, schools and public spaces.

According to the report, Akech commended the District Internal Security Officer, Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons Service, health workers, market vendors, boda boda riders, business operators and journalists for joining the exercise. She said cleanliness should be treated as a shared responsibility and linked regular clean-up campaigns to better public health, including reduced risks from poor sanitation and stagnant water.

The RDC also acknowledged gaps in compliance, saying some businesses stayed open during the exercise and some residents did not know about the government directive. She nevertheless credited security agencies with helping the activity proceed, and thanked the Dokolo Town Council LCIII chairperson for availing a tractor to collect and move waste.

Dokolo Post also cited Esther Atim, a silverfish vendor at Dokolo Main Market, who welcomed the clean-up as helpful for traders but asked district leaders to provide basic waste management tools such as wheelbarrows, gloves and gumboots. She also called for a proper waste container for market rubbish. The wider initiative is intended to improve sanitation, support environmental conservation and encourage community responsibility for cleaner public spaces.
