Ray Dalio says he warned Elon Musk against betting all his money on SpaceX and Mars exploration - Fortune

What the report says
Fortune reported that Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio said he once cautioned Elon Musk against committing nearly all of his PayPal windfall to the long-shot goal of reaching Mars. Speaking on the My First Million podcast in an episode released over the weekend, Dalio recalled meeting Musk in 2002, after the PayPal sale, while studying the traits of company founders and entrepreneurs.
According to Fortune, Dalio said Musk had about $180 million in proceeds and was considering putting a large share into SpaceX’s space ambitions. Dalio said he advised Musk to keep some money aside as a personal financial buffer in case the venture failed, but Musk rejected that approach. Fortune cited Musk’s own past account that he put $100 million into SpaceX, $70 million into Tesla and $10 million into SolarCity, leaving him close enough to the edge that he later had to borrow money for rent.
Dalio described Musk as a mission-driven “shaper” who moves from broad visions to granular technical details. Fortune used the anecdote to frame Musk’s long-running Mars project as part of a broader pattern: extreme risk-taking, little apparent interest in conventional personal comfort and intense focus on turning ambitious ideas into operating companies.
The report comes as Fortune said SpaceX has drawn fresh investor attention after a Nasdaq debut described in the article as the largest IPO on record. Fortune noted that public-market scrutiny has put new focus on the company’s mix of satellite, rocket, AI and Mars-related ambitions, including its stated goal of developing technologies to help make life multiplanetary.
