Rashford returns as AC Milan highlight issues facing Carrick

What the report says
Manchester United ended their pre-season with a 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, in what BBC Sport described as a disappointing final warm-up before the Premier League opener against promoted Hull City. United led twice, but Milan, managed by former United boss Ruben Amorim, responded to expose problems in Carrick’s side, particularly in defence and midfield spacing.
The match did include several positives for United. Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez all made their first appearances of pre-season, while Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans completed 90 minutes. BBC Sport reported that Carrick said there were no fresh injury concerns, although Mason Mount’s foot problem has kept him out for several games during pre-season.
Rashford’s return was the main talking point. He came on after about an hour for his first appearance for Manchester United since December 2024, after loan spells away from the club. The report said his brief outing was steady rather than decisive, but it may become significant if his future is resolved before the transfer window closes on 1 September.
The result also highlighted tactical issues Carrick will need to address quickly, including how United handle switches of play and cover wide areas. BBC Sport said the performance leaves the manager with important decisions before the league campaign begins.
