Race the Nile: The 800km Cycling Challenge Putting West Nile on the World Map

West Nile is preparing to host a new international cycling event, Race the Nile, that will cover about 800 kilometres from November 23 to 27, 2026. According to Nile Post, the inaugural race will start and end in Arua City and pass through all districts in the region, with most of the route on gravel roads.

Organisers say the challenge is meant to do more than test endurance. It is being positioned as a tourism and development initiative meant to highlight West Nile’s landscapes, cultural diversity, history, food and agricultural products. The route is expected to take riders past parts of the River Nile, the Northern Escarpment, Rift Valley scenery and areas near Lake Albert, giving the region wider exposure.

The event is being organized as a self-supported race, meaning cyclists will have to arrange their own accommodation, repairs and supplies, though they will be given route information and stopover guidance. Organisers said that format could create opportunities for local businesses such as guesthouses, food vendors, transport operators and bicycle repairers, while also drawing attention to communities that are often outside Uganda’s main tourism circuit.

About 50 international cyclists are expected for the first edition, with entries already received from Uganda, the United States, Europe and other parts of Africa. The winner will receive a distinctive prize: the chance to name a white rhino at Ajai Wildlife Reserve, linking the race to conservation as well as sports tourism.
