Questions remain over Ebola patient who travelled across three nations undetected

What the report says
BBC Africa reports that a 40-year-old Kenyan businessman with Ebola was able to move through the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Kenya over several weeks before his infection was recognized. According to Africa CDC’s reconstruction of his journey, he first became unwell in mid-September while in eastern DR Congo, but was initially treated for other illnesses at health facilities there without an Ebola test being taken.
The report says he then flew within DR Congo, crossed into Uganda, passed through airport screening with a normal temperature, and later boarded a flight to Nairobi on 3 October. He was not identified as a suspected Ebola case until he reached a private hospital in Kenya’s capital, where laboratory tests confirmed the virus. He died two days later, becoming Kenya’s first confirmed Ebola case.
The case has raised questions about border screening, health-facility detection and reliance on temperature checks and self-reporting during outbreaks. Kenyan authorities have identified dozens of possible contacts and placed many under quarantine in Nairobi, while tracing continues in Uganda and DR Congo. The report notes that the outbreak in DR Congo has been severe, with thousands of deaths this year, and that the Ebola strain involved was Bundibugyo Ebola, one of the variants circulating in the region.
Public-health officials cited by BBC Africa say the episode underlines the need for earlier reporting of symptoms, faster testing and stronger cross-border surveillance, especially in areas with frequent travel and limited border control.
