Putin pledges Russia’s support to end US-led war on Iran

What the report says
Russian President Vladimir Putin told Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow is ready to help end the U.S.-led war on Iran, according to Russian news agencies cited by Al Jazeera. The two leaders met in Turkmenistan on Thursday, before a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which brings together former Soviet republics. Al Jazeera reported that Putin said Russia would do “everything” it could to help resolve the conflict and described Iran’s efforts as genuine.
The meeting adds to a broader pattern of closer ties between Moscow and Tehran. Al Jazeera noted that the two countries signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty last year covering trade, military cooperation and other areas. It also pointed out that both governments face heavy Western sanctions and have continued to deepen diplomatic and military contacts.
The article said the talks come as Iran-U.S. diplomacy appears stuck. It also noted that Putin and Pezeshkian met previously at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan last month, and that Moscow has separately said it is prepared to mediate in efforts to end the war. For now, the significance lies in Russia publicly aligning itself as a possible intermediary at a time when regional and international negotiations remain unsettled.
