Pupil arrested after two teachers shot at French school

What the report says
A student was arrested after two staff members were shot at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille, on Monday morning, according to BBC World News. The incident involved the school principal and a teacher, both of whom were injured but were reported to be in stable condition and not suffering life-threatening wounds. French media said the detained pupil was 14, and local officials said the arrest happened immediately after the shooting.
Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari said no children were hurt and that students were quickly confined and kept safe. Reporting cited by the BBC said the pupil is believed to have brought a gun into the school before several shots were heard, after which the student was restrained by a staff member. The headteacher was reportedly shot in the leg and the teacher was hit in the thigh.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray said on social media that two National Education staff members had been wounded at the school. He and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez were due to visit the site later on Monday. BBC’s report also noted that other French outlets, citing investigative sources, said the case was not thought to be linked to protests over school conditions. More broadly, the shooting has renewed attention on school safety and violence in France.
