PSA: T-Mobile is down, iPhones showing ‘SOS’ mode - 9to5Mac

What the report says
9to5Mac reported that T-Mobile experienced a widespread U.S. service disruption on July 27, 2026, with many iPhone users seeing the “SOS” indicator in the status bar. The outlet said reports gathered by Downdetector suggested the problems began around 4 p.m. ET, and subscribers in multiple parts of the country reported losing the ability to make calls, send texts or use cellular data.
According to 9to5Mac, a Reddit thread and other social platforms drew thousands of complaints from affected T-Mobile customers, while some members of the 9to5Mac team also experienced the outage on iPhones. The report noted that the iPhone “SOS” status means the device is not connected to the carrier network, though emergency calling may still be available. The article said there was no indication at the time that Verizon or AT&T were experiencing similar outages.
T-Mobile later told 9to5Mac that its teams were working on technical issues affecting some customers and that resolving service impacts was its top priority. The company said it had deployed available resources to restore connectivity as quickly as possible.
In a later update published by 9to5Mac at 8:33 p.m. PT, T-Mobile said service had been fully restored for all customers and apologized to those who experienced network impacts. The incident matters because mobile outages can interrupt voice, messaging and data access for consumers and businesses, and the “SOS” display can cause concern even when emergency calls remain possible.
