Protests spread across France as ‘yellow vests’ set to join

What the report says
Protests that started in mid-September at a high school in Créteil, a Paris suburb, have grown into a wider national movement across France, according to Al Jazeera. What began as student unrest over poor school conditions, overcrowded classrooms and teacher shortages has spread to thousands of upper secondary schools, with teachers, university students and trade unions also joining in. On Saturday, some “yellow vest” activists, veterans of the cost-of-living protests that shook President Emmanuel Macron’s first term, were expected to take part as well.
Al Jazeera reported that authorities are bracing for a possible nationwide mobilisation, with calls circulating on social media for demonstrations at more than 1,750 locations. The unrest has drawn a forceful police response. Officials say more than 900 officers have been injured since the protests began, while critics argue that heavy-handed tactics and arrests of minors have worsened tensions. Reports cited by the outlet say thousands of children have been detained since mid-September, and human rights lawyers have highlighted serious injuries to two teenagers in separate incidents.
The protests are unfolding against a difficult political and economic backdrop. France faces fiscal pressure, weak growth and public frustration over the cost of living and the quality of public services. The government has tried to ease student anger with measures such as dropping planned fee increases and promising more substitute teachers, but protesters and some educators say the deeper issue is unequal access to education. The unrest also comes as Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu’s government weighs budget restraint amid high deficit and debt levels, making the demonstrations politically significant ahead of future budget debates and the 2027 presidential race.
