Protests continue in Houston over ICE killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo

Al Jazeera reports that hundreds of people demonstrated in Houston, Texas, on Sunday to demand justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent on July 7. The protesters marched from Ervan Chew Park and briefly blocked a bridge on Dunlavy Street, carrying signs including calls to abolish ICE and seek justice for Salgado Araujo.

According to the report, Salgado Araujo was driving a construction crew to a job site when he was killed. ICE said he tried to ram an agent with his vehicle and that the officer fired in self-defence. Al Jazeera, citing witnesses and a statement from the US attorney for the Southern District of Texas, noted that accounts have disputed or not fully supported key parts of ICE’s description, including any collision or explicit statement that the officer feared for his life.

The Houston protest comes amid wider scrutiny of immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump’s second term. Al Jazeera, citing The Associated Press, reported that encounters involving ICE and other immigration agents have been linked to at least 10 deaths since January 2025. Similar rallies were held elsewhere, including in Maine after the fatal shooting of Joan Sebastian Duran Guerrero during a traffic stop.

The report also says Democratic lawmakers have sought an investigation into ICE hiring practices after allegations about the background of an officer involved in the Maine shooting. Trump administration official Tom Homan said ICE would require at least one agent to wear a body camera during vehicle stops, while Trump has urged the agency to continue using traffic stops.
