Private Schools Launch Seven Million Tree Campaign to Restore Environment

Private education stakeholders in Uganda have launched a nationwide campaign to plant seven million trees, according to Nile Post. The initiative is intended to support environmental restoration, climate resilience and wider participation by schools and communities in conservation efforts. It was unveiled along the banks of River Nyamwamba in Kasese District, where organisers said the site was chosen because of repeated flooding and serious riverbank damage.

The campaign marks 33 years since the liberalisation of Uganda’s education sector and brings together schools, learners, teachers and nearby communities. Its stated goals include restoring degraded ecosystems, protecting water sources, limiting soil erosion and helping communities better withstand climate change. The report says the effort is being led by private education stakeholders working through the National Private Educational Institutions Association.

NAPEA Chairperson Hasadu Kirabira said schools should do more than provide classroom learning and should help protect the environment. He encouraged private schools across the country to take part and said the success of the campaign will depend on shared responsibility among learners, teachers, parents and local leaders.

Nile Post reported that stakeholders see the tree-planting drive as part of broader sustainable development efforts. Beyond the immediate planting target, they hope it will help rebuild damaged landscapes, support biodiversity and encourage young people to become more active stewards of natural resources.
