Private Claude Chats Exposed in Google and Bing Search Results - WIRED

WIRED reported that some shared Anthropic Claude conversations were appearing in search results on Google and Microsoft’s Bing, exposing chatbot threads that users may not have expected to be easily searchable. The issue was reportedly first noticed by a Reddit user and involved Claude “share” links, which create public URLs for specific chat snapshots. WIRED said examples surfaced in search included conversations about political affiliation, legal ethics questions and erotic role play.

According to WIRED, Anthropic had used a robots.txt file to tell web crawlers not to access shared Claude chats, a common web standard for crawler instructions. But the publication found that sampled shared-chat pages lacked a “noindex” tag, which Google and Bing documentation describe as an additional control for keeping pages out of search indexes. Bing was still showing hundreds of results for a Claude share-site search when WIRED checked, while Google results for the same query had stopped appearing.

Anthropic told WIRED that users control whether Claude conversations are shared publicly, that the company does not provide chat directories or sitemaps to search engines, and that share links are not guessable unless users distribute them. Google said indexing public web pages is the site owner’s responsibility and that search engines provide controls for crawling and indexing. Microsoft did not comment before publication, according to WIRED.

The report highlights a privacy risk around AI chat-sharing tools: a link meant for limited sharing can become more visible if posted elsewhere and indexed. WIRED noted users can manage shared Claude conversations through Claude’s privacy settings.
