What the report says

The Uganda Bakers Association says bread prices in Uganda will rise from November 2, as bakeries respond to higher costs for wheat flour, yeast and transport. The announcement affects a staple food widely consumed by households and comes as families already face broader living-cost pressures.

According to the association, the wholesale price of a 1kg loaf is expected to increase from Shs5,500, with recommended retail prices projected to reach at least Shs6,500. A 500g loaf is also expected to rise from Shs3,000 to between Shs3,300 and Shs3,500. The association said members agreed on the new rates after reviewing production costs in a general meeting.

Chairperson Gaster Lule Ntakke said the rise in input and transport costs had become difficult for bakeries to absorb without affecting operations. He said the group wants to maintain production and keep bread within quality and measurement standards set by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards.

The price change is taking place alongside wider inflationary pressure in Uganda, including higher fuel costs that can push up transport and distribution expenses across the economy. Nile Post reported that the new bread prices are due to take effect on November 2, though final retail prices may still vary by bakery or outlet.
