What the report says

Wales head coach Rhian Wilkinson says the pressure will be on Norway when the sides meet in the Women’s World Cup play-off final in December. Her comments came after Wales beat Albania 3-0 in Llanelli to complete a 4-0 aggregate win and move within one tie of a first Women’s World Cup appearance.

BBC Sport reported that Wales will face a Norway team ranked well above them by Fifa and led by former Wales boss Gemma Grainger. The final is set over two legs, with the first match at Cardiff City Stadium on 1 December and the return in Norway four days later. Norway, the 1995 world champions, have qualified for every Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.

Wilkinson said Wales can still create problems for the favourites, pointing to the team’s spirit and improving performances. She also noted that Wales are a relatively young side and that the squad will need time to recover before preparing for the next challenge.

The article also explained that beating Norway may not be enough on its own to reach the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, because Wales could still have to go through an inter-confederation play-off depending on other European results. That means the pathway to qualification remains complicated even after the semi-final win.
