President Museveni to Preside Over International Day of Older Persons Celebrations at State House Entebbe

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is scheduled to officiate Uganda’s national celebration of the International Day of Older Persons on October 1, 2026, at State House in Entebbe. According to Watchdog Uganda, he will attend as chief guest at a ceremony set to begin at 11:00am and bring together government officials, elderly affairs leaders, development partners, representatives of older persons and other invited guests.

The report says the announcement was made on X by Alhaji Faruk Kirunda, the President’s special assistant on press and mobilisation and deputy press secretary, who also urged the public to follow the event. The celebrations are expected to be carried live on radio and television stations nationwide, allowing wider public participation.

Watchdog Uganda notes that the annual observance, marked globally on October 1, is meant to recognise the contribution of older people to society and draw attention to concerns such as welfare, rights, health and social protection. In Uganda, the occasion has often been used to highlight government programmes for older citizens, including healthcare access, social support and efforts to promote dignity and active ageing. This year’s event at State House is expected to reinforce the message that older persons remain important contributors to families, communities and national development.
