President Museveni to name Uganda’s crude oil blend

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to oversee the naming of Uganda’s crude oil blend during a visit to oil development projects in the Albertine Graben, according to The Independent Uganda. The move comes as the country edges closer to commercial oil production and seeks an official name that can identify the crude’s origin and characteristics in the international market.

The report said the visit on Wednesday followed earlier inspections by Energy and Mineral Development Minister Monica Musenero Masanza, who toured the Tilenga project with officials from the ministry, the Petroleum Authority of Uganda and Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC). Their visit included the Central Processing Facility, which was reported to be 72 percent complete, drilling activity at the Gunya-02 well pad, and a meeting with Project Affected Persons in Kyamandindi Village on livelihood restoration efforts.

UNOC described the naming as a milestone in the shift from resource development to market preparation. TotalEnergies EP Uganda officials said the project continues to employ thousands of Ugandans and has generated major local spending and training activity. Musenero said the oil developments should produce long-term benefits for communities, workers and businesses beyond the construction phase.

More broadly, the expected naming reflects a common step in oil-producing countries, where crude is given a blend name for trade and quality identification. In Uganda’s case, it also signals that the infrastructure and supporting systems are nearing readiness for first oil.
