What the report says

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged Uganda to adopt a more deliberate policy for older persons, including specialised healthcare, stronger family safeguards and better economic support. He made the remarks at State House, Entebbe, during Uganda’s commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons, held as a scientific and virtual event under the theme, “Ageing with Dignity; Strengthening Care and Support Systems.”

According to Watchdog Uganda, the President said support for older people should reflect the traditional role of family, property and a home, while also addressing tensions around inheritance and care. He said the government should consider a law to protect elders from disrespectful children and relatives, and warned against fragmenting family land and assets in ways that weaken households. He also said older persons should be sensitised on modern wealth management and inheritance practices.

On health, Museveni said Uganda should expand guidance on nutrition and create specialised services for older people, suggesting a geriatrician in each district through medical scholarships and training. He also emphasized exercise and lifestyle choices as part of healthy ageing. On livelihoods, he defended including older persons in the Parish Development Model and said they should also benefit from the Senior Citizens Grant, though he noted budget constraints.

The report also quotes government officials, older persons’ representatives and Ireland’s ambassador welcoming improved social protection, better medicine supplies and more predictable support. The event ended with Museveni launching a daily exercise chart for older persons.
