President Museveni hails Roofings Investment as Uganda deepens industrialization drive

What the report says
President Yoweri Museveni inaugurated Phase IV Level 2 of Roofings Group’s ultra-modern rolling mill complex in Namanve, Mukono District, according to Watchdog Uganda. At the ceremony, he praised the steel manufacturer for helping expand Uganda’s industrial base, increase local value addition and support the country’s push toward a self-sustaining economy.
The article says Museveni linked the investment to the NRM government’s long-term economic agenda, including wider monetisation of the economy and building a more integrated regional market. He also pointed to Uganda’s iron ore resources as a foundation for a competitive steel sector, while commending Roofings for gradually shifting more production steps into Uganda rather than relying on imported intermediate inputs.
Watchdog Uganda reported that the company’s chairman, Dr. Sikander Lalani, thanked the President for attending and credited peace, security, government support and improved conditions for industry as key factors behind Roofings’ growth. Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Sanjay Tanna also welcomed the plant as evidence of investor confidence and said lower industrial electricity tariffs had improved the business environment.
The new facility is part of a larger industrial complex that includes cold rolling, galvanising, edge-trimming and colour-coating lines. The broader significance, as presented in the report, is Uganda’s effort to deepen manufacturing, create jobs and reduce dependence on imported industrial materials, while also serving regional markets in East Africa.
