President Museveni hails historic Uganda-Russia military cooperation

What the report says
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has praised Russia for its military assistance to Uganda and said the two countries share a long-running defence relationship, according to Watchdog Uganda. He made the remarks at State House, Entebbe, during a meeting with a Russian delegation led by Maj. Gen. Sergei Marchuk, the Head of Russian Military Experts in Uganda, and the discussion took place alongside Uganda’s 64th Independence Day celebrations.
Watchdog Uganda reported that Museveni described the partnership as historic and linked it to early 20th-century political developments in Russia. He also thanked Moscow for support to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, pointing to projects and facilities in places including Magamaga, Entebbe, Kalangala and Karama. The president said he would send an official message of appreciation to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Maj. Gen. Marchuk said Russia has continued supporting Uganda since independence and said the delegation had completed work it had previously promised to deliver. The article said the Russian side cited completed military infrastructure and equipment projects, including storage and maintenance facilities, a floating berth at Port Alice, a mobile command post in Kalangala and a multimedia classroom in Karama. The delegation also proposed extending Russian language training for Ugandan personnel from December 2026. The exchange underscores the wider role of defence partnerships in Uganda’s military development and training.
