President Museveni Eulogises Late Gen. Moses Ali as freedom fighter, peacemaker and development champion

Watchdog Uganda reports that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni led tributes to the late Rt. Hon. Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali during a special sitting of Parliament held to honour him. The outlet said Moses Ali, the Adjumani West County MP and former Second Deputy Prime Minister, died on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, aged 87.

According to the report, Museveni laid a wreath on the casket before addressing Parliament, with Vice President Jessica Alupo, Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth, family members and other dignitaries present. The President described Moses Ali as a figure associated with the struggle for freedom, peace-building and development. He recalled Ali’s early link to Idi Amin’s 1971 coup, but said Ali later became opposed to killings under Amin’s rule and was eventually demoted and forced into exile after the regime collapsed in 1979.

Museveni also credited the retired general with taking part in anti-Amin liberation efforts and later choosing dialogue and reconciliation during Uganda’s turbulent post-1970s period. On regional development, the President pointed to Ali’s role in pushing infrastructure improvements in West Nile, including tarmac roads and electricity grid extension, and urged area leaders to continue that legacy through household wealth creation.

The report frames Moses Ali’s career as one spanning more than five decades in military and civilian leadership. Beyond Watchdog Uganda’s account, Ali was widely known in Ugandan public life as a long-serving senior politician and military officer from West Nile, a region whose representation in national politics made his public career significant.
