CNN reported that preliminary findings from a privately funded autopsy have not resolved how Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old whose body was discovered July 6 along the shoreline of Horn Island off Mississippi, died. The independent pathologist, Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., listed both the cause and manner of death as undetermined while further investigation continues.

According to CNN, the independent examination was requested by Wells’ family and is separate from the official autopsy conducted July 7 by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office. State findings have not been released, with toxicology results still pending. Mitchell wrote that the second autopsy had important limits, including his inability to directly examine the airway, lungs and stomach contents, and lack of access to some retained neck structures from the first autopsy. He reported no obvious cuts, fractures or deep-tissue injuries, but said decomposition could make bruising difficult to assess.

Wells, a student and wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, had been on a Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island with friends before he failed to return. CNN reported that questions remain about how he entered the water, whether he was conscious, and whether any force was involved. The case has drawn national attention amid public speculation and concern from the family and supporters.

CNN cited reporting that the Jackson County sheriff’s department has interviewed dozens of witnesses and is working with the FBI. The local district attorney has said investigative results will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether charges are warranted. Family attorney Ben Crump said the family still has more questions than answers.
