Powerful storm floods US Northeast, causes power outages

A slow-moving nor’easter is bringing another round of flooding and power outages to the northeastern United States, according to Al Jazeera. The storm has affected low-lying areas in New Jersey and New York City, with tidal surges flooding neighborhoods, wind gusts toppling trees on Long Island, and streets in Queens inundated. The report says the weather system was still lingering on Sunday, with heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous surf expected to continue into New England.

Al Jazeera reported that more than 100,000 customers were without power across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic at times during the day, with the most extensive outages along the coast from New Jersey to Connecticut. The storm also disrupted air travel, with more than 250 flights cancelled at Boston Logan International Airport by late morning, according to the article. In New Jersey, some areas received more than 10cm of rain since Friday, adding to flooding in communities used to dealing with high water.

The storm had already turned deadly when a tree fell on a New York City housing authority worker on Saturday, the report said. It also raised concerns about coastal erosion as waves struck seawalls and beaches. While the impact was described as far less severe than Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Al Jazeera noted that officials and residents were watching closely because El Niño conditions could make additional East Coast storms more likely this fall.
