What the report says

Pope Leo XIV is recovering in a Rome hospital after surgery earlier this week to remove part of his right lung, according to Al Jazeera’s report citing Vatican statements and his doctors. The 71-year-old pontiff has been diagnosed with lung cancer, and the Vatican said Friday that his condition is improving and that he can carry out normal daily activities independently.

Doctors reported that recent tests, including a blood test and chest X-ray, showed steady progress. The Vatican also released the first photos of Leo since the operation, showing him celebrating mass and standing unaided at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic. The Holy See said he is expected to appear publicly on Sunday for his traditional noontime prayer, which would be his first public appearance since the surgery.

The report said the Vatican has not said when Leo will leave the hospital, though it had earlier suggested recovery might take about a week. It also noted that preparations are continuing for his planned November visit to South America, including Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. Al Jazeera added that the surgery and diagnosis have drawn attention because Leo, elected in May 2025, is considered an energetic leader and a key figure in the future direction of the papacy.
