Police Warn Motorists as Schools Reopen for Third Term Today

Police in Uganda have called on motorists, parents, schools and learners to take extra care on the roads as schools reopen for the third term of the 2026 academic year. The warning, issued by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety and reported by Nile Post, comes as traffic is expected to increase around schools, highways and other busy routes, raising the risk of road crashes involving children.

The police spokesperson for traffic and road safety, Michael Kananura, said drivers should slow down near schools and pedestrian crossings, avoid reckless overtaking and stay focused behind the wheel. He also cautioned against driving under the influence of alcohol and other violations that could endanger learners and other road users. His message framed road safety as a shared duty rather than one left only to traffic officers.

Kananura also urged parents and school administrators to make sure children use safe, inspected and authorized transport. He said school vehicles should be roadworthy, licensed, driven by qualified drivers and not overloaded. Schools were advised to educate learners about road safety and manage drop-off and pick-up points to reduce congestion. Learners were told to use crossings where available, avoid distractions while walking and follow basic precautions when crossing roads.

The broader context is that school reopening periods often bring heavier traffic and more children near roads, making careful driving and supervision especially important. Police said protecting children requires patience and responsibility from all road users during this period.
