Police recover AK-47 rifle, arrest two suspects over Matugga robbery

Police in Wakiso District say they have arrested two suspects and recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and camouflage uniforms as part of an investigation into an aggravated robbery at Rafiki Gardens in Kiti A Cell, Nangabo Sub-county. The suspects were identified by police as Michael Mutyaba and Paul Bazalanga. According to the report, the arrests came through separate operations linked to a robbery that police say took place on July 14, 2026.

Nile Post reports that during the attack armed men targeted a beer delivery truck, assaulted the driver, shot the manager of Rafiki Gardens and took mobile phones and other valuables from customers before fleeing. Police said the recovered items included two loaded magazines with 58 rounds of ammunition and two military-style uniforms believed to have been used in the incident.

The suspects are being held as detectives continue searching for other alleged members of the group and for additional evidence. Police said the pair will be taken to court once investigations are complete, facing aggravated robbery-related charges. Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire also thanked members of the public for sharing information that helped the case and encouraged anyone with further information to contact the nearest police station.
