Police Receive 50,000 Fruit Seedlings Under Welfare Initiative

What the report says
The Uganda Police Force has teamed up with Roofings Group to distribute 50,000 fruit seedlings to officers nationwide, according to Nile Post. The programme focuses on mango, avocado and jackfruit seedlings and is being presented as a welfare initiative meant to help officers improve household incomes, support food production and contribute to environmental conservation.
The rollout began at Nsambya Barracks, where 106 officers were the first beneficiaries before the distribution is expanded to other parts of the country. The Directorate of Welfare, Production and Sports led the launch. Acting Director SCP Timothy Halango urged officers to plant and care for the seedlings properly and said the programme should be followed up to make sure the trees are maintained and deliver the intended benefits.
Nile Post reported that the police view the effort as part of broader attempts to promote productive welfare among staff, especially by encouraging agricultural activity that can generate extra family income. Beyond the immediate distribution, the initiative is also tied to wider goals of food security and environmental conservation. As a general matter, such programmes can help public institutions link staff welfare with small-scale farming and tree planting, though the long-term impact will depend on how widely the seedlings are sustained after distribution.
