Police officers arrested for allegedly seeking roadside bribe from Nigeria's anti-corruption boss

BBC Africa reports that four Nigerian police officers have been arrested over allegations that they mounted an unauthorized roadside checkpoint in Abuja and extorted money from motorists, including Musa Aliyu, the head of Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. The incident allegedly happened on Saturday in the capital, where Aliyu says he was stopped while driving and later made to withdraw 53,000 naira, about £28 or $38, from a cash machine.

According to the BBC report, Police Commissioner Ahmed Sanusi said the officers had left their assigned posts and set up a fake roadblock. Aliyu reported the encounter to police, after which Sanusi said an intelligence-led operation resulted in the arrest of the alleged ringleader and then the other suspects. The officers are now subject to an internal disciplinary process, which the BBC says could lead to dismissal, though such cases rarely proceed to court.

Aliyu told BBC Hausa that after he was stopped, an officer entered his car, requested his driving licence and threatened to take him to court over alleged traffic violations. Aliyu said he agreed to go to court, but the officer instead demanded money, refused a bank transfer and directed him to withdraw cash.

The case is significant because the alleged target is himself a senior anti-corruption official in a country where police extortion has long been a public concern. Sanusi condemned the alleged conduct and warned that abuses of authority would not be tolerated, framing the matter as a choice between serving as a police officer and acting like a criminal.
