What the report says

Croatian police are investigating antisemitic chanting by Hajduk Split supporters before Thursday’s Europa Conference League match against Ajax in Split, BBC Sport reported. Footage shared online showed fans outside the stadium chanting references to Auschwitz and praising Adolf Hitler as they marched toward the ground. The procession included a yellow car carrying a coffin marked “Ajax,” a detail that added to the hostile atmosphere around the fixture.

According to BBC Sport, local police said arrests had already been made and that additional people had been identified and were being pursued. Croatia’s ombudswoman, Tena Simonovic Einwalter, described the incident as hatred and intolerance, while the Croatian government also condemned the Nazi-related chanting and said it did not reflect the values of modern Croatia.

Inside the stadium, Hajduk Split beat Ajax 2-1, though play was paused for about 10 minutes because of fireworks in the stands. Hajduk later issued an apology on social media without directly mentioning antisemitic abuse. The case comes against a backdrop of previous disciplinary action involving Croatian football over discriminatory behaviour, and it is significant because Ajax is historically linked with Amsterdam’s Jewish community and because the incident may prompt further scrutiny of fan conduct and club responsibility.
