What the report says

Police in Kasese, western Uganda, are investigating the death of an unidentified adult man whose body was found on a farm in Umoja Cell, Nyamwamba Division, Kasese Municipality. According to Nile Post, the body was discovered around 7 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, in the farm of Mzee Paul Rutagarama after residents had reportedly raised concerns about a suspected theft in the area.

Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate said officers went to the scene and deployed a sniffer dog to help trace what happened, though the dog later lost the scent. Police said preliminary information suggests the man may have been assaulted in a nearby cassava plantation before his body was dragged through a fence and left in the farm. However, the force stressed that the circumstances remain under investigation, including unverified allegations that the deceased may have been suspected of stealing.

The man had no identification documents, and police have asked anyone with a missing relative to check the mortuary at Kasese Municipality Health Centre III. The body is being held there pending a postmortem examination to help establish the cause of death.

The case comes amid police concerns about possible mob justice. Authorities urged residents not to take the law into their own hands and to report suspected offenders to police instead, while investigators work to identify the deceased and those responsible.
