Police Investigate Death of Suspect Shot During Arrest in Kyankwanzi

Police in Kyankwanzi District are investigating the death of a 44-year-old man, Barushimana Asuman, who was shot during an attempt to arrest him over allegations of threatening violence and assault. According to Nile Post, the incident happened at his home in Gayaza East LC1, Gayaza Sub-county, where officers from Gayaza Sub-county Police Station went to apprehend him.

The report says the arrest attempt turned violent after the suspect allegedly resisted, pointed a spear at officers, and threw stones and other objects. Police also said he later came out of the house with two pangas and a hammer and advanced toward them. During the confrontation, Sergeant Okongo Stephen was injured, and another officer fired at Barushimana in the right leg after warning shots failed to stop him.

Barushimana was taken to Gayaza Health Centre III but died several hours later. Police later recorded the matter as a murder case under Kyankwanzi CRB 916/2026, examined the scene, took witness statements, and handed the body to relatives for burial. An SMG rifle and 10 rounds of ammunition were recovered as exhibits.

One police officer has been arrested as inquiries continue. The case is significant because it raises questions about the use of force during arrests and remains under active investigation.
