Police, Boday Financing Company Conduct Motorcycle Theft Crackdown in Nansana

Police in Nansana have arrested more than 20 people and recovered more than 10 motorcycles in an operation targeting suspected dealers in stolen motorcycles and spare parts, according to Nile Post. The crackdown was carried out with MOGO, a motorcycle financing company, and focused on mechanics and spare-parts shops in Nansana and nearby areas that authorities believe were handling stolen bikes, stripping them for parts and reselling components to boda boda riders.

The report says officers raided at least one shop where they found motorcycles that had been dismantled or fitted with parts that did not match their original components, raising suspicion that they had been tampered with. Those arrested included a woman, and all were taken to Nansana Police Station for questioning as investigations continue to identify the owners of the recovered motorcycles.

The operation comes amid broader concern about motorcycle theft in Uganda’s transport sector, especially among boda boda riders whose livelihoods depend on their bikes. Frank Mawejje, who leads the national boda boda riders’ association, welcomed the crackdown, saying theft has become a serious threat to the industry. MOGO’s Douglas Kikonyogo also said the company has suffered losses from motorcycle theft and warned those involved to stop.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the arrests and said the investigation is ongoing. Police said the operation will continue as they work to disrupt theft networks and the illegal trade in motorcycle parts.
