Police Arrest Socialite Don Chris Over Alleged Labour Recruitment Fraud

Ugandan police have arrested socialite Christian Asiimwe, widely known as Don Chris, in connection with allegations that he took money from people seeking jobs overseas. According to the Nile Post report, officers detained him in the early hours of Thursday, August 27, 2026, at a bar in Zana, in Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District.

Police say the case centers on claims of false pretences and fraudulent labour recruitment linked to Asiimwe’s former role as a director of the now-closed Sky Pins labour recruitment company. Authorities allege that, between 2022 and 2025, he promised work in countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, with positions such as waiters, cleaners and caregivers. The report says alleged payments varied by job and destination, with some victims said to have paid between Shs5 million and Shs10 million.

The newspaper said more than 500 people have already recorded statements as part of the investigation. It also noted that complaints had circulated for years from people who said they lost money in recruitment arrangements, and that the matter drew further attention after Asiimwe reappeared on social media and made comments that some complainants found mocking.

Police said Asiimwe remains in custody and will be taken to court once inquiries are complete. They also used the case to remind Ugandans to check the licensing and legitimacy of labour recruitment firms before making any payments, a standard precaution in a sector that has drawn repeated fraud concerns in Uganda and elsewhere.
