Police Arrest One Of Its Own Seen Beating Suspect at Hoima CPS

What the report says
Police in Uganda’s Albertine region have arrested a constable after a video circulated online showing him beating a suspect at Hoima Central Police Station. Nile Post reported that the officer, identified as Police Constable Eric Nkata, is attached to the Regional Flying Squad in Hoima.
In the footage, Nkata is seen striking the suspect with what appears to be a wire and a police baton while demanding information about allegedly stolen phones. The suspect repeatedly denies knowing anything about the phones. The video quickly spread on social media platforms such as TikTok and X, prompting public criticism and renewed concern over how suspects are treated in custody.
Albertine region police spokesperson Julius Hakiza confirmed that police reviewed the video, verified the officer’s identity and arrested him after it was brought to the attention of senior officials in Kampala. Hakiza said members of the public who shared the recording helped ensure the incident was addressed, and he urged people to keep reporting misconduct while saying such tips would be treated confidentially.
The case has drawn attention to wider questions about police accountability and interrogation practices in Uganda. While Hakiza said police have professional procedures for handling suspects, the incident has intensified scrutiny of alleged abuse in detention and calls for disciplinary action when officers are accused of misconduct.
