Police Arrest Bus Driver at Maya Checkpoint Over Drink-Driving

What the report says
Police in Uganda have detained a bus driver after officers said he was stopped at the Maya Checkpoint in Mpigi District and found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura identified the driver as Bosco Wansika and said he would be taken to court. The action came as police stepped up enforcement against commercial transport operators.
In a separate operation, three school bus drivers were intercepted in Njeru and accused of operating without the badges required by the Ministry of Works and Transport. Police said those drivers were also detained and were expected to appear in court. Kananura urged bus operators to comply with licensing and other safety rules, warning that drink-driving and other violations put passengers and other road users at risk.
The Nile Post report said these arrests are part of a broader crackdown on commercial and heavy vehicle operators, with police checking driver qualifications, licences and road safety compliance. It also noted a related case in which another driver was detained at Maya after allegedly failing to stop for traffic officers and being found without a valid driving licence. The intensified checks come amid wider government scrutiny of heavy trucks and school transport, including safety inspections and competency requirements for drivers.
