Police Arrest 124 Drivers in Drink-Driving Crackdown

What the report says
Police in Uganda arrested 124 drivers in a countrywide drink-driving crackdown carried out across nine police divisions, according to Watchdog Uganda. The operation covered Katwe, Kampala Central Police Station (CPS), Kabalagala, Nsangi, Kawempe, Old Kampala, Nansana, Jinja Road and Kiira Road, with suspects detained ahead of court proceedings scheduled for the following day.
The report said the enforcement drive focused on motorists believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol as police stepped up efforts to reduce road crashes and other traffic dangers. Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said the campaign was part of an ongoing effort to remove dangerous drivers from Uganda’s roads. He also urged people not to drink and drive, advising them to arrange a sober driver or use a special-hire vehicle instead.
Police said Katwe recorded the highest number of arrests at 24, followed by Kawempe with 18 and Nansana with 16. Kabalagala and Old Kampala each had 14 arrests, while CPS Kampala recorded 13, Jinja Road 12, Kiira Road seven and Nsangi six.
The broader significance of the operation is road safety: authorities say they want to deter impaired driving and protect motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users. The article indicates the crackdown is part of continuing enforcement efforts, and police warned that similar operations would continue.
