Pokémon Red And Blue Mod Turns The Game Boy Games Into A Gorgeous 3D Diorama - Kotaku

What the report says
Kotaku reported that a new fan mod for Pokémon Red and Blue reimagines the original Game Boy titles as a 3D-style diorama, giving the first-generation games an HD-2D-like presentation. The article, published July 29, 2026, says the update is part of the Pokémon Gen 1 Recompilation Project, a recreation of the early Pokémon games that adds customization options beyond the original releases.
According to Kotaku, the project already allows players to alter elements such as character sprites, visual filters and graphics settings. Its new Voxel mod changes the perspective of the world, making environments appear upright and dimensional rather than flat, while also adding new shading. The result is intended to let players revisit Red and Blue with a look closer to modern retro-inspired visual styles.
Kotaku said the mod is still a work in progress. Creator bryanthaboi has noted that some visual issues remain, including glitches and sprites with missing colors, and is inviting people to help playtest through the project’s Discord community. Battles are also presented differently, taking place in the overworld rather than against the plain battle backdrops used in the Game Boy versions.
The development matters because Red and Blue remain foundational Pokémon games, but their original presentation can feel dated to modern players. Kotaku frames the mod as a new way to experience the early games around the franchise’s 30th anniversary, while preserving the distinctive appeal of the originals.
