PLU Joins Tororo Clean-Up, Steps Up Anti-Corruption Campaign

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) used a National Cleaning Day exercise in Tororo Municipality to promote an anti-corruption message alongside calls for patriotism, accountability and stronger citizen participation. According to Nile Post, the activity brought together PLU officials, led by Secretary General Fadil Twalla, residents and traders who joined the street clean-up and temporarily closed businesses to take part.

Twalla said the organisation was trying to connect communities with government and encourage people to put Uganda first. He also said PLU planned to use similar outreach events and community barazas to discuss local concerns and mobilise residents around public accountability. Local leaders welcomed the campaign, saying corruption and misuse of public resources continue to affect service delivery in the area.

Tororo Municipality MP Shyam Jay Tanna pointed to alleged theft of medicines in health facilities and payments charged in government-aided schools as examples of problems that need attention. The event also highlighted practical sanitation challenges in the municipality, including limited waste-collection equipment. Some garbage was reportedly burnt after available vehicles could not carry it away, raising concerns about pollution and health.

Tororo District Chairperson John Okea called for more garbage trucks, while Town Clerk Ayub Alikwan Kisubi urged residents to keep cleaning beyond official national cleaning days. After the Tororo clean-up, PLU held a community baraza in Magodes Town Council focused on national unity, accountability and development.
