Playing MLB trade deadline matchmaker: 10 players and teams that just make sense together - CBS Sports

What the report says
CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa framed the approaching 2026 MLB trade deadline as unusually uncertain, with crowded standings making it harder to identify firm buyers and sellers. In a July 29 piece, he emphasized that the exercise was not a prediction column but a set of hypothetical player-team matches he believes would fit before Monday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline. He noted that, to that point, the only notable move had been the Connelly-Early-for-Curtis-Mead trade.
The most aggressive idea in the column would send Detroit ace Tarik Skubal to Milwaukee, with Axisa arguing that the Brewers’ recent deadline additions have been useful but short of a true all-in push. He also floated Padres reliever Mason Miller to the White Sox as both a present and future bullpen anchor, Mets pitcher Clay Holmes to the Cubs as a preferred target over Freddy Peralta, and Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers to the Yankees because of New York’s need for a right-handed-hitting catcher.
Other proposed fits included Luis Arraez to the Rays, Casey Mize to the Braves, Lane Thomas to the Phillies and George Springer to the Guardians. Axisa tied each scenario to a roster need: Tampa Bay’s contact-oriented offense, Atlanta’s rotation depth, Philadelphia’s right-field and right-handed hitting issues, and Cleveland’s need for more lineup production.
The column matters as a snapshot of deadline logic rather than reporting on completed negotiations. It highlights how contenders may weigh short-term postseason help against prospect costs, while clubs with rental players or controllable arms decide whether the current market is the right time to sell.
