Photos: Russian drone strikes pound civilian targets across Kyiv

Russian drone strikes hit Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities on Monday, according to Al Jazeera’s report based on Ukrainian officials and wire service images. The attacks damaged or set fire to civilian sites in the capital, including the National Academy of Sciences in the historic center, as well as apartment blocks, offices, petrol stations, data centers and cultural locations.

Authorities in Ukraine said at least seven people were killed and more than 80 were wounded across the country. In Kyiv, a woman died and several others were injured when a drone struck the academy building near the German embassy and key government institutions. Photos from the scene showed firefighters and rescue workers responding to fires, evacuating injured people and clearing damage at hospitals and nearby buildings.

Outside the capital, Ukrainian officials said three people were killed in a strike on an office center in Dnipro, with additional casualties reported in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Odesa. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the strikes as an attempt to spread fear and disrupt normal life, while Ukraine again accused Russia of systematically targeting civilians and infrastructure.

Moscow said it was striking military-related sites. The report places the attacks in the broader context of Russia’s four-and-a-half-year war against Ukraine and the continuing debate over whether the strikes are aimed at battlefield assets or civilian pressure points.
