Authorities in Nepal have warned residents in flood-prone districts to stay on alert after water levels rose in the Bhotekoshi River, as rescue workers continued clearing a main highway connecting Kathmandu to one of the areas hit hardest by Wednesday’s flash flooding. According to Al Jazeera’s report, flood alerts were sent to mobile phones on Sunday morning amid concerns of further inundation.

The disaster has affected both Nepal and China’s Tibet region, with the combined death toll rising to 750 and more than 3,000 people still missing. Nepal’s disaster agency put the death toll in the country at 734, with 2,498 people unaccounted for, while Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths and 546 missing. The article notes that some of those missing are Nepali nationals and others are from more than a dozen countries.

The Red Cross said as many as 93,000 people in Nepal have been affected. In response, Nepal appealed for international financial aid and specialized rescue equipment, including heavy-lift drones, DNA testing kits and body freezer units. Several governments and international organizations have announced assistance, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United Nations, the European Union and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
