Photos: France, Spain battle ‘monster’ wildfires as more heat looms

What the report says
Al Jazeera, citing news agencies, reports that firefighters in France and Spain are struggling to contain major wildfires during a period of extreme summer heat. The report, published July 27, 2026, says more than 325,000 people have been forced from their homes, with the largest displacement concentrated in France’s Gironde area, which includes Bordeaux, and with fires also burning in central Spain near Madrid.
In southwest France, authorities warned that another heatwave was expected to hit the already damaged wine-growing region around Bordeaux. The National Firefighters Federation of France said the French fires had generated an unusual pyrocumulonimbus, a towering fire-driven cloud system that can create winds and lightning, raising the risk of additional outbreaks. Gironde officials also moved to restrict some holiday camps, including overnight Scout activities and camps for people with disabilities.
In Spain, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said the fires were still moving forward, though at a slower pace. Civil protection chief Virginia Barcones described the Avila-area blaze as a “monster” and said it covered a perimeter of 280km and 77,000 hectares. Al Jazeera reported that about 75,000 people had been evacuated from the Madrid region, Avila, Toledo and Castellon in Valencia, while shifting winds were pushing some fires south of Madrid and away from the capital for the time being.
The fires come during the peak holiday season after repeated heatwaves and low rainfall left forests highly flammable. Al Jazeera notes that scientists link climate change to more frequent and intense extreme weather, a broader context for worsening wildfire risk across southern Europe.
