PGA Tour suspends Trey Mullinax for anti-doping violation - USA Today
What the report says
USA Today reported that PGA Tour golfer Trey Mullinax has received a six-month suspension for violating the tour’s anti-doping policy after a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The PGA Tour announced the discipline on Wednesday, July 29, and said Mullinax will be eligible to return on Jan. 16, 2027.
According to the report, the tour said Mullinax cooperated during the process and accepted the penalty. In a statement provided through the PGA Tour, Mullinax said he had used medication for a condition first diagnosed when he was in college, but did not obtain approval under the tour’s anti-doping rules. He said it was his responsibility to understand the policy and said he did not take the substance to gain a competitive edge.
Mullinax, 34, has one PGA Tour victory, the 2022 Barbasol Championship. USA Today reported that he played in two PGA Tour events this season and missed the cut in both. The suspension means he will be sidelined from tour competition until early 2027 unless otherwise changed by the governing process.
The case is significant because anti-doping violations in golf remain relatively uncommon compared with some other sports. USA Today noted that the PGA Tour’s anti-doping program began in 2008 and that at least five golfers have been suspended under it since then. The matter also underscores the tour’s requirement that players seek clearance for medications that may contain prohibited substances.
