Yahoo Sports reported that the PGA Tour suspended Trey Mullinax for six months on Wednesday after the golfer violated the tour’s performance-enhancing substances policy. According to the report, the tour said Mullinax tested positive for a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, but it did not identify the substance or say when the test occurred. He is eligible to return on Jan. 16, 2027.

The tour said Mullinax cooperated during the process and accepted the penalty. In a statement cited by Yahoo Sports, Mullinax said he was responsible for knowing and following the tour’s anti-doping rules. He said the positive test was connected to medication for a condition diagnosed while he was in college, but he did not name the medication or the condition.

Mullinax also said he did not intend to gain a competitive edge and accepted the consequences. The 33-year-old has one PGA Tour victory, the 2022 Barbasol Championship. Yahoo Sports reported that he has played only two tour events this season, missing the cut in both, most recently at the Zurich Classic in April.

The suspension could affect Mullinax’s ability to secure playing status for next season because it covers the FedExCup Fall period. Yahoo Sports noted he is No. 150 in the FedExCup Fall standings, while the top 100 earn PGA Tour cards and the top 125 receive conditional status. The report also said his Major Medical Extension expired at the end of last year’s FedExCup Fall slate.
