PFF Says Besigye Out of ICU but Remains in Critical Condition

The People’s Front for Freedom says Dr Kizza Besigye has been moved out of the intensive care unit at Mulago National Referral Hospital, but remains in critical condition after collapsing during a court appearance last week. The update was given by PFF Buganda chairperson Dr Lulume Bayigga, who said Besigye is still very weak, cannot feed himself, and is being closely monitored. The party said his condition followed the courtroom incident connected to his treason case.

According to the Nile Post report, PFF linked Besigye’s collapse to what it described as a protest against an unfair judicial process. Bayigga said Besigye was trying to defend both his own rights and the broader right to a fair trial. The party and other opposition groups have also written to Deputy Chief Justice Dr Flavian Zeija seeking dialogue about concerns over how Besigye’s case has been handled, and they said they are still waiting for a response from the Judiciary.

The party also raised concern about the fate of its member Sam Mugumya. Bayigga said a video circulating online has renewed hope that Mugumya may be alive, but urged the government to release him and allow him to return to his family. He called on President Yoweri Museveni and Gen Kahinda Otafiire to help secure Mugumya’s release, while alleging he remains in military custody. The developments add to wider opposition criticism of due process in politically sensitive cases in Uganda.
